How to Recognize a Quality Scented Candle

Not all scented candles are created equal. Certain signs, visible before and after lighting, help distinguish a quality candle.

A quality scented candle is judged with the senses, but also with a careful eye for detail. Here is what to look for.

The Wax

Wax is the foundation of everything. Vegetable waxes, such as soy wax, burn more slowly and evenly and hold fragrance well. A smooth, even surface, free from visible cracks, is an excellent first sign.

The Wick

The wick should be centered and proportionate to the candle’s diameter. A well-sized cotton wick produces a calm, steady flame, without black smoke.

The Fragrance, Cold and Hot Throw

A good candle can already be appreciated when unlit, but the true test comes when it is burning: the fragrance should diffuse gradually and remain distinctive, without becoming cloying. In the finest candles, the composition has structure, with top, heart, and base notes.

How It Burns

The first burn is decisive: let it burn until the surface has melted from edge to edge, usually a couple of hours. This prevents tunneling, the hollow in the center that wastes wax and shortens the candle’s life. A quality candle, when burned correctly, is consumed evenly.

The Vessel

Thick, beautifully finished glass, a carefully crafted lid or packaging: the vessel protects the wax, preserves the fragrance, and, in a luxury candle, remains an object to be reused.

Where It Is Made

Knowing where and how a candle is made is valuable information. VORNX candles are made from natural soy wax with a cotton wick and are produced in Italy, in small batches.

How do you prevent tunneling in a candle?

At the first burn, let it burn until the wax has melted across the entire surface, usually a couple of hours.

Is soy wax better?

It is a vegetable wax that burns slowly and evenly and holds fragrance well; for this reason, it is widely used in high-end candles.
